Walsall to Host Babyfest in Celebration of World Breastfeeding Week

Walsall families are invited to come together for Babyfest 2025, a special community celebration marking World Breastfeeding Week, taking place on Friday 2 August at Walsall Arboretum Extension.

Organised by Walsall Council’s Infant Feeding Partnership, the free event runs from 11am to 2pm and is open to all families with babies and young children. It promises a fun, welcoming atmosphere with plenty of activities for little ones and support for parents and carers.

The event aims to raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding, offer friendly, accessible support, and celebrate the positive impact that breastfeeding can have on both babies and their families.

Councillor Gary Flint, Portfolio Holder for Health and Wellbeing, said:

“We’re proud to be celebrating World Breastfeeding Week by bringing families together for this special event.

Babyfest is about creating a relaxed, supportive space where parents can find information, meet others, and enjoy time with their little ones. Whether you’re breastfeeding, bottle-feeding or a mix of both, everyone is welcome.”

A wide range of family services and organisations will be on hand to offer advice and support. Parents can connect with local midwives, health visitors, infant feeding specialists, and peer supporters, while enjoying entertainment, stalls, giveaways, and refreshments.

Councillor Flint added:

“Breastfeeding can be incredibly rewarding, but it’s not always easy. That’s why it’s so important that families know support is available, right here in Walsall. Babyfest is part of our commitment to helping parents feel confident, informed, and empowered.”

Families don’t need to book—just turn up and join the celebration. The event will take place near the Grange Car Park entrance to the Arboretum Extension.

Inspired by the Lionesses? Start Your Football Journey This Summer in Walsall

Girls and young women across Walsall are being encouraged to lace up their boots and get involved in football this summer—thanks to a new series of free and low-cost activities launched by Walsall Council and its partners.

Building on the legacy of the Lionesses’ phenomenal success in recent international tournaments, the initiative aims to give local girls the chance to try football in a fun, welcoming, and supportive environment.

Whether you’re totally new to the sport or already playing, there’s something for everyone, with inclusive sessions running throughout the summer holidays in parks, schools, and leisure centres across the borough.

Councillor Stacie Elson, Portfolio Holder for Education and Learning, said:

“The Lionesses have inspired a generation of girls to believe football is for them—and here in Walsall, we want to make that a reality.

These sessions are about giving girls the opportunity to try football, build confidence, and enjoy all the benefits that come with being part of a team—fun, fitness, friendship, and self-belief.”

The activities form part of the council’s wider Summer Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme and are delivered in partnership with local sports providers, community organisations, and schools. Sessions are open to girls aged 5 to 16, with options suitable for all levels of experience.

“We want girls to know that football is for them—whether they dream of being the next Ella Toone or just want to have fun and keep active during the holidays. We’re committed to breaking down barriers and opening up opportunities for every young person in Walsall.”

Walsall Council Launches Summer Holiday Fun for Children, Young People and Families

Walsall Council is making summer brighter for local families with an exciting programme of free and low-cost activities designed to keep children and young people active, entertained, and supported throughout the school holidays.

The Summer Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, which runs across the borough until Friday 30 August 2024, offers a huge range of sessions—from sports, arts and crafts, and drama, to cooking, nature play, and day trips. The scheme is aimed at children and young people aged 5 to 16 who are eligible for free school meals.

As well as fun and enriching activities, participants will also receive healthy meals and snacks as part of the sessions. Some activities are also open to those not eligible for free school meals, with places available at a small cost.

Councillor Stacie Elson, Portfolio Holder for Education and Learning, said:

“We know how important the school holidays are for families to make memories together, but we also understand how challenging they can be—especially with the rising cost of living.

The summer programme offers a wide variety of activities to support children’s physical and mental wellbeing while giving parents peace of mind that their children are happy, safe, and well-fed.”

The council is working with dozens of local organisations, schools, charities, and clubs to deliver the programme in every part of the borough, including community centres, libraries, parks, and schools. Whether children want to try something new, make friends, or just have fun outdoors, there’s something for everyone.

“I would encourage all eligible families to take advantage of what’s on offer. There’s so much going on—from sports and drama to coding and crafts. It’s a fantastic way for young people to develop new skills, grow in confidence, and have a great time this summer.”

Walsall Town Centre Set for Exciting Transformation, Say Council Leaders

Walsall Council has unveiled a bold vision to revitalise Walsall town centre, outlining significant regeneration plans that aim to create a more vibrant, attractive, and welcoming place for all.

The proposals were shared in a detailed report by Councillor Mike Bird, Leader of Walsall Council, and Councillor Adrian Andrew, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Regeneration. 

Major developments already underway or in the pipeline include improvements to the railway and canal gateways, the transformation of the former Debenhams building into a modern NHS Community Diagnostic Centre, and investment in cultural spaces, green areas, and new leisure, retail, and housing opportunities.

Councillor Mike Bird said:

“We are ambitious for Walsall. These plans are not just about buildings—they’re about boosting the local economy, creating new jobs, and attracting investment. The changes we’re delivering now will support our town centre to flourish in the years to come.”

The regeneration programme is supported by over £100 million of public investment from various sources including the Town Deal, Future High Street Fund, and the West Midlands Combined Authority. The council is also working closely with private investors to secure additional funding and bring forward development opportunities.

Councillor Adrian Andrew added:

“We are delivering a once-in-a-generation transformation. It’s an exciting time for Walsall, and we are determined to ensure the town centre reflects the pride we have in our borough.

We want Walsall to be a place where people feel inspired—whether that’s through employment, education, culture, or community. This regeneration is key to making that happen.”

The council’s plans also include improved infrastructure, better connectivity, and a focus on sustainability and heritage.

Walsall Residents Encouraged to Have Their Say on Local Climate Action Plans

Walsall Council is inviting residents across the borough to help shape the future of local climate action. A new climate engagement campaign has just launched, aiming to gather ideas, views, and concerns from the community to inform the council’s updated climate strategy.

Following the publication of its first Climate Change Action Plan in 2020, Walsall Council is now working on a refreshed version that will outline priorities for tackling climate change over the next five years. Residents are being encouraged to get involved by sharing their thoughts on what matters most to them when it comes to climate and environmental issues in their neighbourhoods.

Councillor Garry Perry, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Resilient Communities, said:

“We know there is real energy and passion among our communities when it comes to protecting the environment. That’s why we’re inviting people to be part of this conversation and help shape what Walsall’s climate response should look like in the years ahead.

Walsall Launches Free Summer Adventure Passport for Under-Fives

Families in Walsall are being invited to embark on a fun-filled summer of learning and exploration, thanks to a brand-new Summer Adventure Passport launched by Walsall Council.

Available for free from Friday 11 July 2025 at local libraries and Family Hubs, the Summer Adventure Passport is a colourful activity booklet designed especially for children aged 0–5. It’s packed with playful, educational challenges aimed at supporting early development and encouraging families to spend meaningful time together.

Each passport features a wide range of themed activities across key learning areas—including speaking and listening, reading and writing, socialising, eating and drinking, and developing independence. As children complete each task, they can earn a stamp to track their progress, boosting motivation and confidence along the way.

Highlights from the passport include:

  • Healthy Habits – Try new foods and explore good eating and drinking routines

  • Independence Skills – Practice dressing, handwashing, and more

  • Play and Social Skills – Fun games to build friendships and cooperation

  • Reading, Writing and Counting – Early learning tasks to support school readiness

  • Speaking and Listening – Story sharing and communication games

  • Teamwork Activities – Encouraging collaboration and problem-solving

Councillor Mark Statham, Portfolio Holder for Children, Families and Lifelong Learning at Walsall Council, said:

“This is a wonderful initiative to encourage children and their families to take part in a host of varied learning opportunities and fun activities over the long summer holiday.

However, the passport offers more than just fun activities—it serves as a valuable tool to support parents in preparing their child for school, while also providing families with helpful resources and guidance to ensure a joyful and enriching summer for every child.”

Families will also have the chance to win some exciting prizes. Every child registered for a passport will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win a balance bike or scooter—perfect for summer adventures. All participants will also receive a special certificate to celebrate their achievements.

Park Improvements Underway Across Walsall Thanks to Community-Led Investment

Improvements are now underway at three much-loved parks and play areas in Walsall, following a successful community campaign to enhance local green spaces.

Backed by £470,000 in funding from Local Trust and delivered on behalf of One Palfrey Big Local, the project was shaped by resident feedback that identified key areas in need of investment. Work is now in full swing to revamp Palfrey Park, Bescot Crescent, and the Rutter Street arena.

At Palfrey Park, the play area is being extended with four new pieces of play equipment and a brand-new seating area, creating a more welcoming space for families and children to enjoy.

Meanwhile, both Bescot Crescent and Rutter Street play areas are being fully refurbished. Outdated equipment is being removed and replaced with modern, accessible alternatives. The Rutter Street sports arena is also being resurfaced, with new basketball posts installed and unused lighting columns taken down.

Councillor Gary Flint, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Health and Wellbeing at Walsall Council, welcomed the improvements:

“I am very excited to see these improvements delivered.

“This work will give our young people better places to enjoy and socialise in inclusive environments. I am very thankful for all those involved in making this happen.

“Once complete I would encourage our residents to make use of the facilities and look after them.”

The project is being delivered by RFC Construction, appointed by Walsall Council, in partnership with One Palfrey Big Local and Local Trust.

Colleen Jones, Chair of One Palfrey Big Local, said:

“This is one of our legacy projects and we’re so pleased this work is now underway. We look forward to seeing the works complete for children and families to enjoy, just in time for the summer holidays.”

Hugh O’Sullivan, Contracts Surveyor at RFC Construction Ltd, added:

“We are delighted to contribute to the enhancement of One Palfrey Big Local by introducing works that offer added visual appeal for the entire community.

“Our collaborative efforts aim to provide improved facilities for families of all ages.”

The work is expected to be completed by the end of July, just in time for the school holidays.

Fibbersley Local Nature Reserve Gets a Major Makeover Thanks to £75,000 Grant

Fibbersley Local Nature Reserve in Willenhall has recently undergone a significant transformation, thanks to a £75,000 grant from Veolia Environmental Trust. 

What’s New at Fibbersley?

The project has delivered a range of upgrades aimed at improving access, enhancing visitor experience, and supporting long-term conservation. Key improvements include:

  • Over 750 metres of new, accessible pathways, replacing uneven ground and old steps with a smooth, easy-to-use ramp

  • New gates to improve security and accessibility

  • An updated site map and ladder board to help visitors navigate the reserve

  • Targeted vegetation management in woodland areas to support healthy habitats

  • Dredging of a key pond to improve conditions for amphibians and other aquatic species

Councillor Gary Flint, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Health and Wellbeing at Walsall Council, praised the project:

“We have a wide array of green spaces in Walsall, and any improvements to make them more accessible should be celebrated.

With the good weather, I would encourage anyone to get out there and explore what Walsall has to offer.”

The enhancements were delivered by Walsall Council in partnership with the Friends of Fibbersley Local Nature Reserve, a group of dedicated local volunteers who help care for and promote the site.

Lesley, a member of the Friends group, said:

“The new paths are mud-free in the winter and such a pleasure to walk around these days.”

Clive, another volunteer, added:

“There are more than 73 species of birds on the reserve and now is such a good time to visit – hopefully we will see you at the reserve.”
