A new guide has been launched to support people in Walsall who may be experiencing harms linked to gambling, as well as those affected indirectly such as family members, friends and colleagues.
Developed by Walsall Council’s Public Health team, the new gambling harms directory offers clear guidance, practical tools and signposting to specialist services. A separate version of the guide has also been created specifically for professionals working with residents.
Gambling is widely understood as risking money or something of value on an activity with an uncertain outcome in the hope of winning a prize. It can take place remotely, such as online,or in person through betting shops, casinos or other premises. Forms of gambling range from lotteries and casino games to sports betting, and similar mechanics can also appear in console games, such as loot boxes.
The consequences of gambling can be far-reaching. As well as affecting mental and physical health, gambling harms can influence relationships, finances, housing, employment and education. In Walsall, it is estimated that over 13,000 adults experience some level of harm from gambling—an impact that may extend to many more when families and communities are taken into account.
Residents and professionals are encouraged to use the directory and follow three key steps aimed at achieving positive, lasting change:
-
Use tools to block gambling activity, such as TalkBanStop.
-
Learn more about gambling harms through online resources like Gambling with Lives.
-
Refer yourself to a specialist treatment service, including the West Midlands NHS Gambling Support Clinic or Aquarius.
Councillor Gary Flint, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Health and Wellbeing, said:
“Gambling harms can affect anyone and often the harms are hidden. It can affect people directly but also those around them, such as family members, children and friends. If your gambling or someone else’s is causing you to worry about money, work and relationships, you are not alone. The good news is that with help and support, recovery is possible. It is important to follow through the three steps outlined and access the support and tools you need, which are free and anonymous.”
