Walsall town centre came alive with festive spirit on Saturday 29 November, as thousands gathered for the return of the official Christmas Lights Switch-On event.
The celebration drew significantly higher footfall than usual, with a 34% increase compared to the previous Saturday, as residents and visitors enjoyed a packed programme of seasonal activities.
From live music and interactive workshops to festive markets and the chance to meet Father Christmas, the event offered something for all ages. Families were able to visit Father Christmas free of charge at Saddlers Shopping Centre, where children shared their Christmas wishes and posted letters to the North Pole.
At the heart of the day was the much-anticipated Christmas Lights Switch-On at The Bridge, beside the Sister Dora statue. Taking place at 5.30pm, the moment brought crowds together for a festive countdown, illuminated by sparkling lights and seasonal music.

Across the town centre, visitors explored a range of festive experiences. The New Art Gallery Walsall hosted a Christmas makers’ market, where local artisans showcased handmade gifts and decorations, while The Crossing at St Paul’s transformed into a winter wonderland as part of the Walsall MakerFest Fringe.
A highlight of the evening was Illuminate, a striking light projection show that filled the area with colour and creativity, setting the scene for the main switch-on event.
Throughout the day, live music and entertainment added to the atmosphere, creating a vibrant and welcoming start to the festive season in Walsall.
